I want to talk about hustle culture for a minute, and I want to do it without being preachy about it, which I'm aware is a slightly contradictory opening.
Here's what I'll say first: I understand the appeal. When I was earlier in my career, the loud version was seductive. There's something genuinely motivating about that energy, at least initially. The certainty of it. The community. Here is a clear set of behaviours — wake up early, work more hours than everyone else, treat softness as failure — and if you do them, you will succeed. That's a simple and appealing story.
The problem is that it doesn't describe how good salespeople actually work. It describes how good salespeople look on Instagram.
